Training Philosophy

When it comes to training my philosophy is this "if you really want it, you will be willing to work for it." This statement I use outside of the gym as well. You have probably worked hard to get the job you have or the raise you wanted or even the house you live in. I want you to take that drive and apply it to working out and making the daily changes you will have to make to achieve results. Where many people fall short is they may work out intensely but once they walk out of the gym they go back to old lifestyle habits such as inconsistent eating or not resting enough. In order to make the changes you have to make this takes a conscious effort twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Again it's more difficult than a job change. This is a "lifestyle" change.

Now the changes should be gradual. Very few people can dive in and make a complete turn around just like that. I try to get my clients to develop the consistency of regular workouts first along with eating five "small" meals daily. Increasing water intake is also very important. This leads me into my next topic.

My initial consult is actually an evaluation (see my rates page for cost). When we meet for the first time I will be asking you a series of questions as an attempt to gather information about you, hence the "personal" part of the title "personal trainer". I need to know what, when, why, why not and how, how much and how little, the more information the better the program. After the questions I will take you through a series of physical tests. These are required, as I need to know what you are capable of doing. Some of the things I will be checking for will include muscle imbalance, coordination and any health related warning signs.

You may have some areas which you will be weak in due to poor posture. A postural assessment will also be included in the evaluation. Circumference and body composition will be optional, some people don't want to know the numbers and I completely understand. My recommendation will always be to monitor your body using a mirror and become more receptive to how you feel and look.

The programs are designed to fit you and will include a combination of fixed machines, free weights and balance and stability type exercises. I have fun when I am training so your sense of humor is required. However, we have to be respectful of the gym members around us. Be prepared, the exercise program will take effort and sweat is necessary. Exercise will also make your muscles sore but initially the release of endorphins will create a feeling of euphoria, which will make you feel better, especially after a stressful day. The soreness is manageable with plenty of aerobic activity and stretching.

I view this as a learning experience for both of us. When we part ways you should feel comfortable and confident enough to train in any gym. You will also learn to use different machines or pieces of equipment should someone hog the piece of equipment you would like to use. Proper gym etiquette will also be taught. (Very important!)
